Historic Avalon building retains its old-world charms while taking its place among classic hotels STAFF REPORT As the year 2012 heads for its swan song, the Santa Catalina Is- land Company recently completed major renovations to the Hotel At- water in Avalon. To celebrate its recent grand re-opening, the Island Company is offering the Atwater Getaway Plus Package, which includes compli- mentary boat tickets and Catalina Expeditions activities with a stay at the Hotel Atwater. "We are proud to have restored the old-world charm of the Ho- tel Atwater and its unique place among Avalon's classic hotels," said Randall Herrel Sr., CEO of the Santa Catalina Island Com- pany. It's great for families, cou- ples and groups, situated in a nice neighborhood of small restaurants- and shops with a short walk to the beach." Renovations to the hotel, origi- nally built by William Wrigley Jr., preserve its gracious 1920s charm with a bright, two-story lobby with updated interior designs that cre- ate a fresh and welcoming ambi- ance. The entry features original blue, gold and black Catalina tiles. Enlarged prints of colorful vintage Catalina postcards and posters set around a lovely 16th century sun- burst mirror. The comfortable guest rooms are completely refurbished with new carpeting, sleek dark wood" Catalina Expeditions such as the furniture, queen-sized beds, ceil- ing fans, television and telephones. A burgundy-and-gold checkered carpet is offset with fresh white walls and linens, creating a calm and relaxing environment. The Atwater Getaway Plus Package is available through March 16, 2013 on Fridays and Saturdays (except the Christmas and New Years week from Dec. 26, 2012 through Jan. 5, 2013). The Atwater Getaway Plus Package includes a complimen, tary round-trip boat ticket on the Catalina Express or Catalina Flyer and complimentary use of select Undersea Expedition, Avalon Theatre movie tickets and access to the 32-foot high rock-climbing wall, as well as kayak rental and mini golf. Packages start at $129 per person for the first night with additional nights starting at $99 per person (double occupancy). Courtesy photo New Year's Eve Gala is Dec. 31 Reservations are now being accepted for the 40th Annual New Year's Eve Gala, Monday, December 31, 2012, in the world-famous Casino Ballroom. Entertainment will be provided by The Xceptional Music Company Rock Orchestra. The Gala includes a buffet din- ner, dancing, champagne split, one bottle of wine in a specially engraved bottle (#14 in a series), and party favors. A photographer will be onsite. A trio from the band will play during the dinner hour, and the full band will perform from 9:00 pm to 1 a.m. Coat & Tie are required; Black Tie is optional. Reservations for this year's Gala are $175.00 per person. Dinner reservations will be accepted. Guests arriving early may wait in the Marine Bar on the Mezzanine, where seating and beverages will be available. The buffet dinner will be available until approximately 9:15 pm.
