Turning Avalon.Village into a Winter Wonderland , From village to wonderland I would like to take this oppor- tunity to extend a very big thank you to Pastor Lopez and his fabu- lous crew for transforming our Village of Avalon into a beautiful "Winter Wonderland" once again! Every year the city seems to spar- kle and glow more and more. When I first arrived in Catalina Island, I remember sitting outside Leo's Catalina Drugstore watch- ing the city workers stringing up Christmas lights along Crescent Avenue..Wat really caught my Cliff Notes BY PAT JAMIESON " order of Santa's reindeers. I be- lieve all of us know Rudolphal- ways leads the pack but darned if I can ever remember what order the rest of the reindeer follow or their names for that matter....(Hence the diagram). After some nodding of heads I watched and listened as the work- ers all agreed they had Santa's : reindeers in their proper order of command and began their task of hoisting Dasher, Dancer, Prancer add Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen add of course the most , " famous reindeer of all, Rudolph, bravely leading the way for Santa attention, however, was watching and his sleigh! a few of the city workers looking When they were finally sus- very seriously over a diagram laid pended high above the foot of out in front of them detailing the Sumner Avenue in front of Wrig- ley Fountain I couldn't help think- ing to myself,. "So this is what It's like to live in a small town at Christmas time!" Well, this will be my 16th Christmas here in Avalon and to this day I always get a chuckle when I look up and see Santa and his reindeers flying high above me in their same order and same place every year! So when you are out and about during this holiday season, either busy at work, doing errands or just taking a casual stroll throughout town, please stop and take a mo- ment to look all around you at the beautiful lights adorning our village, and if you happen to see one of our city employees or Pas- tor Lopez, please take the time to thank them for a job well done! Merry Christmas ! The first night, despite having only four returning players and no starters from lastyear's CIF run- ner up team, Avalon had a strong showing winning the game 36-25. Junior Martina Machado led the team with 9 points and 9 rebs. In the second game Saturday, Dec. 1, the Lady Lancers struggled to find scoring. They led at half time 15-13, and looked as though they were getting stronger. But the Ravens picked up their game in the third quarter out playing the Lancers 12-4. Despite, sophomore Joanna Chavoya's 12 points and 9 rebounds, lost the game 31-24. The Lancers are a young team with a lot of potential. This year's team consists of seniors: Laura Amezcua, Nancy Valverde; juniors: Machado, Vanessa Sanchez, Alicia Chavez, Sandra Gallegos, Natalie Vega; sopho- mores: Chavoya, Diana Rios, Susanna Savitt, Michaela Edwards, and freshmen: Carly Glass, Jenny Song, and Jeniece Neville.
