1889 Researched by Chuck Liddell, Compiled by Jennifer Leonhardi In addition tc~ the regular week- ly "Time Capsule" segments cov- ering 75. 50. 25 and 10 years ago, this column will periodically fea- ture a special "Catalina Rediscov- ered" segment covering Avalon's history. Having already done 1887 and 1888, this one will take us back 123 years to 1889. Based on documents from the Catalina Island Museum's ex- tensive archive of journals, such as the Catherine MacLean Loud manuscripts, contemporary news- papers, oral history interviews, and old photographs, "Catalina Rediscovered" will cover Avalon's very beginnings, from 1887-1915. That is a good way to be kept advised to any historical work that I am doing. 1889, Part 2 The 4th of July was greeted with (reworks, guns and rifle shots. banners everywhere; all of the fa- cilities were lit and .athletic events galore, both on land and water. Nightly music came from the Riding horses and mail delivery Frank P. Whittley (b. January 1852) had over one dozen riding horses to be used by sheepherders and rented to tourists and hunt- ers who wanted to utilize more of Catalina. This motivated Whittley to clear the Indian Trail. directly be- hind the Metropole Hotel (which is now East Whittley), to Hog's Back. the Summit. so that riders would now have access to Middle Ranch in the Interior. On July 27, Harry M. A. Elms (b. 1866. England) was named Avalon's official postmaster of Avalon (he kept this post until February 1892). Elms no longer had to buy his own stamps and the mail was no longer dumped on the pool tables of the Metropole Hotel for the lo- cals to dig through, but was now located in Postmaster Elm's Shell Shop And Curiosities. north cor- ner of Crescent and Whittley. The mail was "delivered" by putting it in airtight containers and throwing it overboard from the boat Ida. The first 'liquor store' Never willing to give up his desire to sell alcohol, after his hotels, tents and cabins, and yachts Hardware Store (across from the in the harbor, The need for a permanent place of worship by th6 Christian popu- lation caused George Shatto, and wife, Clara, to travel to Vernon, a district of Los Angeles, during the-Spring, to locate a ministerial leader. They located a young minister, Rev. Charles S. Uzzell, who was suffering from tuberculosis. They promised to move him to Avalon if he got well and th~s in- vitation seemed to cause Uzzell to recover adequately for the;reloca- tion. Rev. Uzzell first prayed with the assembled under the large roofed tent on Crescent Avenue. An official meeting was held on Monday, July I. in the home of Capt. Alonzo Wheeler (b. 1835), Crescen~ and Sumner, west corner, to organize a permanent church. Besides ~Capt. and Mrs. Sophia Wheeler and Rev. Uzzell, 9 inter- ested members attended. They raised $55 for the new church. On July 15 of that year, 15 members joined this new church. The Shattos provided the corner of Beacon and Metropole Avenues as a gift for the new congregation. The church was completed in only three weeks. On Aug. 21, Avalon's only or- thodox Protestant church was part of the Congregational Church council of Los Angeles. The new church had its dedica- tion on Aug. 25, 1889 and the Rev. Dr. R. G. Hutchins of the FirstCon- gregational Church Of Los Ange- les preached the first sermoia~ The topic was, "Launch out into the deep and let down 3~o~r nets for a draught." present Tuna Club) was destroyed by order of Shatto who didn't want alcohol sold in his new town of Avalon, George Bryant, along with Henry Crocker, had a floating barge in the north bay bearing on its canvas roof the persistent name of Hardware. Cracker's job was to keep the "flap" open on the floating saloon. Shatto had Mr. Fox patrol the shore to make sure that none of the alcohol made it to Avalon. The barge was soon destroyed and visitors to the Island had to bring their own. This still wasn't filling the needs of Avalon so Sumner decid- ed to "quietly" fill this demand by supplying good liquor in one of the rooms of the Metropole Hotel that he was now managing. It was called "Number Six." Shatto never found out that the first "liquor store" had now found it's home in Avalon, and in his fa- mous, Metropole Hotel. ~fachts in the harbor Billy Bruin, who was also in- volved in the "Hardware Store" became the first to rent rowboats at $2.50/week or he would build one for you at $20. The yachts in the harbor were: White Wings, Wanda, America, Sappho, La Paloma, Puritan, Judge, Catalina, Osprey, Ruby, Bonita, Aggie, Rambler, Lone Star, Sea Gull, Sea Mew, San Diego, Ariel, Avie M., Bertie, Dump, Falcon, Julius, Linda, Los Angeles, Nellie, Neptune, Penelope, Pete Roard- ing Gimbet, Santa Ana, Sea Lion, Seminole, Warrior, Ida and the U. S. Revenue Cutter, Corwin. Jimmie Elms named his row- boat Dump, because he enjoyed putting "dudes" with inflated egos in it, which would easily turn over, causing much laughter from the crowds, minus the dudes. "Mexican Joe" (Joseph Precia- do, b. 1828, Mexico) had lived on the Island since around 1832. He usually rowed daily from White's Landing to Avalon, where he would pick up a patron to go fishing. He would row him across the East end of Catalina to Church Rock. about 6 miles, for the large, sporty jewfish (black sea bass), then return by the same route late in the day. The business of Avalon is business Businesses started to turn Avalon into a "real" town: Cable Grocery, in front of wharf; Hunt- chins Camp, east end of Crescent, under Peter Gano's home; Overall Camp, Descanso beach: Princess Skating Rink (behind the present Abe's Liquor Store); Shoemaker Drugs (location of the present Cricket Alley); Dr. Bishop's Gen- eral Store of drugs, groceries, dry and wet good, and a lunch counter; Sam Lee and Company, laundry; J. P. Sheets. carpenter; Charlie E Hargitt, news depot, cigars, and tobacco; J. F. Frankenfield, bak- ery with cakes from Los Angeles; George Ramsey, Avalon barber Shop; Cable Grocery, Crescent Avenue, near eastern corner of Metropole; Ben Rosin's Bowling Alley, Crescent (east of the present U. S. Bank). Real estate sales, going from $75-$1200 a parcel, were begin: ning to bloom. Among others, the Moore cot- tage, on the north corner of Metro- pole and Beacon, was built for the Mackey family. Dr. and Mrs. G. Roscoe Thomas, built on two lots, which he purchased from George Shatto (between and across from the Tuna and Yacht Clubs). Calvin and Araminta Thornton purchased the Frank Cotter house on Metropole, just below Beacon corner and enlarged it. Not only in Avalon, but in the .adjoining coves, building was commencing. John MacLean built a wooden cabin on property that Mr. Ham- ilton purchased for $3000, on the beach North of Descanso Beach. He only lived there for a short time. Shatto gave permission to Cola- nel and Mrs. A. s. Moore to pitch a tent and live at Descanso Bay. Activity at Swain's Landing (later to be called Toyon Bay) was pro- gressing. A new problem At the death of Capt. Alonzo Wheeler's Uncle, Nathaniel Par- sons (Aug. 24, 1811, Gloucester, Massachusetts-August 22, 1889), one of the twins to name Parson's Landing, a new problem arose.
