Friday, November 29, 2002 The CATALINA ISLANDER Page 6 I wish to express my respect for Blanche Wrigley Schreiner for having the courage of her convictions, as evidenced in her letter to the editor, dated March 29, 2002. As I was still mulling over my thoughts and scribbling copious notes, she stated clearly and succinctly the essence of my sentiments regarding the Conserva cy's wholesale eradication and extermination five-generation early island families mentioned in her letter and I care about Catalina passionately. I also believe that the Conservancy, properly implemented is the best means we have of preserving Catalina's unique character. But something has gone awry. Several years ago, when I considered donating to the Conservancy and volunteering as the purported evils of the eucalyptus tree. Despite my inquiries, no one within the Conservancy responded. I did, however speak with other people knowledgeable in the field. Their responses led to my growing concerns over the goals of the Ecological Restoration Department and the need for some of its activities, albeit sanctioned by the Board of Directors. Today, I have many more serious concerns. I understand that the goal of the Ecological Restoration Department is to return the Island program. Operating in a closed circuit fashion without full accountability to benefactors and grantors of government funds is irresponsible and despotic. In my vision of the Conservancy as our best hope for preserving Catalina's fragile eco-balance, accountability is essential. I also believe that the character of Catalina derives from the many cultures and unique individuals (Blanche, you are one of them), who have left their imprint on the Island, affirming that NOT ALL HUMAN INTERVENTION IS BAD!
