Both currently reside in Moab, Utah but hope to very soon become resi- dents of Avalon. In attendance were the bride's mother, Ann Carver Hoehberg (Avalon Class of 1961) who is the daughter of the late Dorthee Carver and Frederick Hochberg, Sr. both long time residents Of Avalon. Ann is anxious to continue: her family's heritage of residency on the Island. Also attending were the daugh- ter of the groom, Anna Day with The bride's great-grandparents, Chesney and Amy Carver moved to Avalon as early pioneers (dur- ing the Banning years), began the creamery and built The Carver Building on Crescent Avenue (cur- rently where the Vista del Mar is located). During the Carver years it housed the Carver Apartments, a tea room, grocery, pharmacy (co m - plete with soda fountain where Tini Voci worked) and various oth- er businesses. During the years the Hochbergs owned the property, it was called The Campo Bravo. The bride's grandfather, Fred Hochberg's had an accounting of- the mariachi band, Los Camp- eros de Nati Cano who strolled the streets of Avalon between the Steamer's arrival and departure. Fred's other accomplishments in- eluded working in Nicaragua on the building of the Pan American Highway, member of MENSA and founder of Los Aficionados de Los Angeles. When Fred lett Avalon in 1966, he joined the architectural firm of William Pereira & Associates AIA as CFO. The Pereira firm created land use master plan proposals for both Avalon and the Island in the t960s. MYSTERIOUS ISLAND Catalina's facts, folklore and fibs This Week" Nuking the East End BY JIM WATSON From our "Catalina History That Never Was" department comes the story of an ambitious project to be undertaken by Southern California Edison involving, the construction of a nuclear power plant on the Island's East End. In the mid-1960s, back in the days when we thought ourselves and our technology invincible, Southern California Edison had embarked on a mission to con- struct a number of"atomic plants" throughout the Southland; a plan that included the possibility of lo- cating a plant on Catalina. Initially, the Isthmus' was consid- ered the most appropriate location for the project. The Island Compa- ny had already been working with Bechtel Corporation on various housing and commercial develop- ments in the area, so it was only natural to team up with them and Edison on the nuke plant project. But other sites on, the Island were under consideration as well, including White's Land- ing, Howland's Landing and even (gulp) Little Harbor and (please God, no) Ben Weston Beach, The East End eventu- ally won out for final con- sideration, however, and for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was its prox- imity to Avalon and the associated infrastructure of housing, seaplane and ferry transportation and so on. On top of that, the-East End made more sense berause, for one thing, the quarry had already, been active for many year s and the land around it had already been worked and leveled. On top of that the steep under- sea topography off the East End would decrease the length of the ocean water conduits used for Jim Watson Columnist cooling and there would be no , . e need for major power transmission lines across the Island; the power would go straight out of the plant, across the channel and into Hun- tington Beach. The plant was to be put on the site of the Pebbly Beach Quarry and since it wasn't scheduled to be completed nntil 1980, Connolly-Pacific had enough time to carve out enough flat land for the facility. In fact, much of the landfill and rock that was to be removed from the quarry was earmarked for the con- struction of an artificial Island off Huntington Beach, upon which was to be built--you guessed it--an- other nuclear power plant. Sticky issues first arose for the plan when Edison requested a lease- to-buy option on the property. But the Island Company--which was not keen on the associated regula- tion and land-use issues it would face with part of the Island owned by an outside entity felt it was in the best interest of the Island to maintain ownership of the land. As an overture to Edison, and to show they were still interested in the / EQUIPMENT BOUNDARY project, the Island Company agreed to defer the nearly $4 million cost of relocating the quarry that would have been charged to Edison. Needless to say, the East End nuke plant was never built and, in fact, never really came close to real- ity. As it is with many of these enor- mous public works projects, in the end it was economics that spelled doom for the Catalina nuke plant. Skyrocketing construction costs in the early 1970s were only part of the problem, especially since competing locations for Edison's new plants on the mainland faced the Same problem. One of the most important fac- tors that led to the demise of the project a factor that was unique to Catalina as opposed to the pos- sible mainland sites--was the cost of the underwater cable, transpor- tation of construction materials to the Island and the age-old Catalina problems associated with housing and infrastructure that ultimately did the deal in. In other words, once again it was the San Pedro Channel--that 20-mile strip of bounding Pacific swells that separates us froni traf- fic, crime and the collective urban troubles of 20 million people--that ended up being our salvation. On Saturday, November 19, 2011, eight school fdends of Ann Hochberg May gathered for a lunch to welcome her back to the Island with a trip down memory lane. Twenty-one old school from the 1950's and 1960's were passed around for identification of classmates and through the group's collective memory, mos t (but not all) now have names to match their photos. School friends who attended were Ann, Pat Hoefs, Rod Wilcox, Rose Ellen Gardner, Steve Smith, Marsha Haney, Bob Piacentini and Sandra Putnam. Ann's traveling party also attended including Eileen Van Wuyckhuyse, and Usa and Ran Day, her daughter and Son-in-law.
