Wrigley's 'Democratic Dream' exhibit closes this weekend Museum prepares for new exhibit on Island's role in World War II COURTESY OF THE CATALINA ISLAND MUSEUM This weekend is the last chance to see the Catalina Island Muse- um's special exhibition "A Demo- cratic Dream: William Wrigley Jr. and Catalina Island." Wrigley exerted an incalculable influence over the history of Santa Catalina Island. His vision to cre- ate a world-class resort destination for the "rank and file" or "wage- earners" of America is a unique tale and reveals a rare generosity and compassion toward the com- mon man. "A Democratic Dream" ex- plores how and why Catalina Is- land became what it is today. The foundation for the last eighty years in Avalon was set between 1919 and 1932 under the guidance of one man. Wrigley's death in 1932 marked the end of the golden era of development in Avalon This exhibition examines the life and times of William Wrigley Jr. and can onl 3, be viewed at the Catalina Island Museum through Nov. 26. World War II exhibit set for Dec. 7. "First Line of Defense: Cata- lina Island and World War II" ex- hibition opens Dec. 7 The Catalina Island Museum's" upcoming special exhibition will delve into the Island's unique role inWorld War II. Museum patrons will learn how Catalina Island quickly transformed from one of the world's preeminent vacation destinations into a strategically mportant Federal Military Zone. The stories of island residents, soldiers and spies will be revealed through photographs, letters, rare film footage, top-secret weapons and recently declassified docu- ments. Throughout the exhibi- tion, patrons will experience the tension, struggles and sacrifice of American citizens as they trained and prepared for war on the Island of Romance. The Catalina Island Museum invites you to the opening recep- tion for "First Line of Defense" on Friday, December 7 from 6- 9 p.m. Tickets are free for members of the museum and $10 per person for the general public. The event will feature catering by Steve's Steakhouse.
