Every year on the final Thursday of October, there are some strange sights on the Catalina Island Golf Course. This year, a contingent of costumed golfers took over the course for a couple of morning hours as the Cat~- fina Island Women's Golf Club participated in the An- nual Halloween Scramble Tournament. Thi~ year had a Witch, Pumpkins, a Pirate, a pair of Hawaiian Tourists, Mary Poppin's sister, Candy " Korn, a Skeleton, and even the Ace of Hearts compet- ing on teams in the nine hole event. First Place Honors went to the team of Ellen Hodge, Pat Hoefs, and Allison Osin- ski. The Second Place Team was Elena Maria, Lynne Woolley and Val Schafer. The Longest Drive prize was awarded to Connie Friel and Closest to the Hole prize- winner was Lynne Woolley. A Halloween Awards Lunch was held in the fes- tively decorated Steve's Steakhouse. Women golfers who are Island residents or regular visitors are invited to join the Catalina Island Women's Golf Club. Play Days ai'e scheduled for each Thursday morn- ing. She turned 83 on Oct. 16. She first came to the Is- lan, d in the early 1960s. Her hus- band, Bruce Buell took a job here with the Los Angeles Sheriff's De- partment. They brought their sons Ster: ling and Cody with them and they all fell madly in love with the Is- land. However, they did have to return to the mainland sometime- later. Isabella has returned a few times since, but said, "This time I am here to stay." A longtime self-proclaimed "health nut," Luv has been into healthy eating and living since the early '.50s. Her friends all laughed at her. "Most of those people are either dead or spending a lot of time in the doctor's office," she said. The healthy life style seems to agree with Luv - she looks bet- ter than a lot of 60-year-olds today. On her 84th birthday she plans on parasailing.
