While large bats may rely on their eyes to find their way around in the dark, smaller bats depend more on echolocation. They send sound waves into their environment and listen to the echoes to determine where everything is. Bats make sounds through their mouth, often at such a high frequency that humans cannot hear them. They wait forthe echoes and use the timing and loudness of them to determine the location, size and type of things around them. Through echolocation, small bats can move easily through total darkness. They can get to areas where other animals cannot and find food to eat late at night.
