SMITH, Passenger Tra/~c Manager, Los Angeles That is why I love this be,autiful spot, a mountainous island away in the big Pacific ocean, where one can dress DOING OUR OWN CLEANING practically as one pleases, go hiking, bathing, swimming, or fishing, or many other pastimes can be selected. True I am not on a vacation exactly, as this is the second season I have had the pleasure of being a member of Charlie Porter's Catalina Marine Band of thirty pieces. Mr. Porter has been the manager of this organization now for thirty consecutive years, which for California is, I should think, a record for management. The conductor is George Mulford, and both gentlemen are very popular with the visitors to the Island, also with the musicians. Popularity with ability is a great asset, and means nluch for the success of any business, trade or calling. The bandstand is situated in a nat- ural amphitheatre, between the hills, surrounded by rows and rows of seats, or benches, aim concerts are given each evening between 7:30 and 9:00 o'clock. The atlnosphere is very cahn and windless, myriads of colored elec- tric lights are strung above the heads of tile audience, and a goodly SUplfly of flags, varigated in colors, surmount- ed by the great and beautiful canopy of heaven, nloon, and stars complete what 1 often ternl "Ottr l:airyland." Our pl'ogratus are carefully selected, both classic and popular nmsic, inter- woven with songs and solos by men> bers of the band. William \Vrigley, king of the Island, has a lovely man- sion built right above the alnphithea- Ire, anti the acoustic properti'es of this natural treatre are such that he can hear every note of the bandand of which he is truly appreciative. Last year Mr. Wrigley had invited his friend, the late President Harding to spend a week at his home on the mountain, which invitation had been accepted and had arranged a special concert to be performed for the late (Continued on Page 9, Column 2) AT OUR OWN PLANT IN AVALON.
