E. Allen Biological Feature Service Several times this year I have heard remarks or I hav'e seen statements to the effect that this has been a good season for insects ("bugs" as most of us call thein). Of course, this fact has usually been stated in the reverse form, i.e. that it has been a bad sea- son for lnan on account of insects. Within the rather narrow limits of my own observation I have noticed, only three kinds of insects whmh seemed to be unusually prosperous (assuming that large numbers indicate prosper- ity. These were ants, termitesand May beetles in the "grub" stage. Secondary indications of insect prosi perity have bee,, large numbers ot mocking birds, and quail and unusual- ly abundant signs of the digging op- erations of skunks, where they have been getting "grubs" from amongst the grass roots. It is well known that animals which feed on insects thrive and increase in numbers when insects becon, e more abundant. I~ast year the stories of crop de- struction by clouds of grasshoppers in the Middle West which devoured all green plants and even chewed up wooden tools forced one to think of the vears in the last century when whole counties were laid bare in a day by those insects. As I remember it there was a general understanding in the closing years of last century to the effect that scientists had discov- ered how to prevent crop destruction by those pests in the future. Yet the stories of destruction in 1930 had a striking likeness to those of fifty years earlier. For some reason or other the grasshopper population of Bug- ville became large and powerful in spite of Man's announcement that he had found a way to control them. A few years ago the cotton-boll weevil made itself a character of first page importance by ruining the cotton crops in enormous areas. At an ear- lier day the Colorado potato beetle had reached notable prominence. Sev- eral different kinds of scale insects have been greatly feared, especially in California, and in the last few years the Mediterranean fru{t fly has be- con,e known all over the country be- cause of its great prosperity in Flor- ida. An outstanding feature in the his- tories of all of these pests is that their S. C. I. Co. Laundry Dept. announces that they are now equipped to serve the general public with all classes of laundry work. leaning One day Service if Required Men's Suits Cleaned and Pressed, $1.00 QUALITY (iUARANTEED Phone 32 or 105 Work called for and delivered Terms: Cash on Delivery S.
