AVALON HARBOR ACTIVITY REPORT FOR JULY 2011 Unlike last year, the Fourth of July holiday brought plenty of visitors and sunshine to the Island. The harbor was packed and there were several boats on anchor. The fireworks show was spectacu- lar and "thank you" to the moor- ing owners for donating close to $5,000 toward the cost. The Annual Catalina Ski Race was held on July 16 with 67 boats participating. The race begins in Long Beach right around 9 a.m., with skiers racing to Catalina and back. The first participants usually arrive around 9:30 and make the turn out in front of Descanso Bay to head back to Long Beach. The 21st Annual San Diego North County Yamaha Personal Watercraft Event was held on July 22 - 24 with 50 jet skis arriv- ing and tying up to the Descanso Beach swim line. The harbor was once again graced with the 100-foot official tall ship, the Californian, that ar- rived on Saturday, July 23 and of- fered free tours the next day. The Californian is a replica of the 1847 Revenue Cutter C.W. Lawrence, which patrolled the coast of Call- fomia enforcing federal law during the gold rush. The Revenue Cutter Service, along with four other fed- eral maritime agencies, was consol- idated into the United States Coast Guard in 1915. Arriving the week of July 25, the Channel Cruising Club visited with 11 boats. The city of Avalon Recreation Department hosts a Kid's Fishing Derby every Wednesday morning from 7 to 9 a.m., which will run through the end of August. Bring your own fishing gear and bait and enjoy a great morning on Green Pier with your kids.
