Urban Adventure Quest Challenge-- thru Sept. 1 Part game, part tour, solve clues Bald Eagles now fou8nd on San Clemente Island BY JIM WATSON Just as the fox population on Catalina Island and the rest of the Channel Islands appears to be making stunning comebacks, news comes now of similar suc- cesses for the bald eagle. Bald eagles were nearly wiped out from their native habitat in the Channel Islands by the wide- spread use of DDT more than half a century ago. But the recent dis- eovery of a nest on San Clemente Island--the firstin more than 50 years--means the iconic birds of prey have now re-established themselves in five of the eight Channel Islands. "This news is very gratify- ing," said Dr. Peter Sharpe of the Institute for Wildlife Studies, who added that he expects to see bald eagles eventually return to all of the Channel Islands "within a few years." Apparently, there are no chicks in the new San Clemente Island nest, however biologists are still encouraged by its establishment on the island located approxi- mately 20 nautical miles from Catalina. Currently, there are more than 60 resident eagles in the Channel Islands, including nine active nests, seven of which are found on Catalina. The two birds respon- sible for the new nest on San Clemente Island include a well- traveled 10-year-old eagle named "A-32" that originally hatched in a nest near Juneau, Alaska, and later transported to Santa Cruz Island as part of a reestablishment program funded by the Montrose Settlements Restoration Program. The male bird of the San Clemente duo is a native of Catalina Island, having been hatched in an incubation facility here and transferred to a nest near Twin Rocks. and challenges around Avalon, and be entered into a team competition for a free Quest awarded each month.
