The penants were floating above the small pier, The red, white and blue, of the Nation's birthday, While fronds of small palms swayed in the soft air Above or along bright Avalon Bay; The gleam of the ocean's deep blues, or bright green, The clear sparkling water--the pebbly shore, The gossamer haze that, like a thin veil Spread its delicate mist o'er the isle I adore. Lightly the yachts drift out from the bay, And 'gainst the deep blue of the water, the sails, Like white wings agleam 'neath the sky of soft blue, Leave the isle of enchantment o'er watery trails. Over and over, the waves curled and broke, While westward the sun crept and sank to its rest, The dusk of an evening--a perfect day's end. Most truly we call this "The Isle of the Blest." Los Angeles, California, July 4th, 1924. HARBOR LIGHTS By James Willard Marsh When the curtains of night close out the day's light, And the bright shining stars appear, When the harbor lights glow and the waves roll in slow, The hour of enchantment is here. If you go for a stroll up the road on the knoll, Or walk out St. Catherine Way, You then will behold, lined in deep blue and gold A Fairyland not seen by day. The soft air of night to the soul brings delight, And things which are near seem afar; The words Magic Isle in your ear ring the while And the world's mystic gates seem ajar. No words can describe, no pen can inscribe, This Fairyland, not seen by day, So go for a stroll up the road on the knoll, Or walk out St. Catherine Way. The bright colord lights, the calm summer nights And the strains of soft music beguile; There is naught to compare, in earth, sea or air, Night fall on this loved Magic Isle.
