Perfect Imperfections BY CAPT. JOHN KING AFISHINADOS CHARTERS 'I love your perfect imper- fections', That is a really clever phrase. I wish that I would have invented it. It is from a love song by John Legend that is currently getting a lot of play time. The recent holiday weekend made me think about my own love affair with Avalon and all of her 'perfect imperfections'. Early in my relationship with Avalon I may have been 'blinded by love'. She was perfect to my eye. Here she sat only a short dis- tance off-shore, and yet she felt so unique, so different than the rattle and hum of the LA basin. With Capt. John King I escaped into her arms when- ever I could manage the time. She was always there for me, whether after a long day of fishing or simply to share an ice cream before heading back across to the madness. Even in tragedy, Avalon was a staunch supporter. Avalon never complained that she was always the 'oth- er refuge' in my life. She never put any pressure on me to 'clarify my intentions'. One day, when the stars were perfectly aligned, I bought a piece of property, which then be- came a vacation house and finally became our home. My relation- ship with Avalon was finally con- summated. aud b dder th n ever! NEW TIER HI ENGINES Our youthful love affair has become a reliable partnership. Avalon helped me to build a new business. We have created a new life together. As is often true in such relationships, we have grown less en- thusiastic about our love affair and have become more con- sumed with work. John King Our time together Columnist has become more precious than ever. We purposely close our busi- nesses and make the time to enjoy the 4th of July. The parade this year was fabulous. The USC band played their hearts out. Those cheerleaders did not seem to mind the hot pavement, and the crowd was fully entertained while 'floats' were stalled or being pushed out of the line. Perfectly imperfect. Avalon delivered. The fireworks show was one of the best, ever. The quality and timing was nearly perfect, save for one of the tubes exploding before lift-off, causing a roar through the crowd. 'Perfectly imperfect'. Even the Sheriffs were happy about the lack of incidents during the busy weekend. I discovered this while reporting that some- one had stolen my trucklet (with the Marlins attached). We found the vehicle at the Blue Water, but never found the culprit...'perfectly imperfect'. I talked with a lot of visitors. Many regulars were curious about my take on the construction and the changes taking place. Visiting friends were wondering whether I still loved Avalon after living here and seeing all the changes. It is true the years have had an effect on both of us. We are grow- ing old together now. At some point Avalon became disenchant- ed with the effects of age and so Free Shipping For Catalina Island Residents IWeb Ordering Available! ] Check in-store pickup [ For free shi in ! It has been a very good year for bigger fish this season and the bite keeps going. In the last two weeks we have seen 9 Afishinados Charter customers capture their first Yellowtail, we have had a Pacific Grand Slam and we have seen 5 halibut over 20 pounds hit the scales, with the largest a whopping 4.4 pounds! The recent South swell has made fishing the beaches very difficult, however, it has only improved the deeper water bite as the big fish come in to see what the swell has shaken loose for breakfast. - Capt.
