Here it is. The Aqnarinm in Battery Park is one of the many points of interest that attract visitors to New York, for here is found the largest collection of fishes in the worhl. The building in which this won(lerful exhihil is show:, was constructed as a fortification in 1807 and in 1S22 was ceded by the vex eminent to the city of New York by an act of congress. In 124 it be- came known as Castle (;arden and was used as a lmldlc allditorium, at that time being accreditL'd as the largest in the world, with a seating capacity of bOt)O. In 1855, and for the following thirty-five years, it was used as an immigration station, and during that period, over 7,(i00,ll(X} int- migrants passed through its doors. In 1896 it was transferred to the Zoolo- gical Society, who still control it though the city owns and maintains it at an atmual expenditure of between rift), and sixty thousand dollars. ]t is equipped with about a hundred wall and floor tanks, 92 of the former and eight of the latter. The interior is circular in form, with a ftoor and up- per gallery, reached by convenient stairways. Each of the tanks arc en- closed in heavy plate glass fronts, and through these interested observers can watch the fish as they swim and sport about. %~ater is constantly circulating through the tanks. 200,1)00 gallons of fresh water and 160,(100 gallons of salt water is nsed every day.
