Much thought should be given to the health hazards of vacation as well as to the hygiene surrounding vacation habits. Unfortunately too many people regard the vacation period as a time not only to change surroundings but also to change their usual habits of life. Men who have been doing sedentary cleri- cal work suffer ill results from over- strain; from too enthusiastic exercise in the form of mountain climbing; too long exposure to the sun or over- strenuous indulgence in play. The body cannot adapt itself, especially the heart muscle, to such rapid changes of habits, and frequently the individual comes back to work more tired than when he left. One of the first rules, therefore, is not to make abrupt changes in physical exercise bt~t to begin gradually and to be sure to take plenty of rest and sleep. Too often this latter rule is utterly neg- lected and while the exercise may not hav'e been too strenuous, adequate rest was overlooked. Particularly with children during vacation period all health habits are thrown aside and children allowed to go about at night far beyond their usual rest period. * One of the most serious dangers [ comes from accidents --particularly automobile accidents. Abou,t 12 per cent of all the deaths occurring during recent .years from this c'ause are in children under fifteen years of age. It seems certain that during vacation periods when people are free from care they are apt to take chances with the automobile that they would not otherwise. One of the first rules S. C. I. Co. Nev- ertheless, it is the neglect of these simple hygienic rules that often spells the difference between a successful, happy vacation and an unpleasant, ex- oensive experience. Proper mental hygiene is as neces- sary as physical recreation to secure adequate relaxation. Do not carry your business worries on your trip. If you are going to worry about ex- penses it is better that you stay at home. If you are going to quarrel with v,mr consort, leave him or her at ho(ne, too. It is generally believed that proper mental attitude during v'acation periods is of at least as great significance as physical well being.
