Lady Lancer Joanna Chavoya plays in Avalon and with the 0C Elite BY DAVID HART One of Avalon's own Lady Lancers, Joanna Chavoya, is play- ing basketball for two teams this Summer. She is getting up to practice with her own Island team at 6:30 a.m. Mon-Thurs, then goes to play on the mainland Friday-Sunday with OC Elite in Rancho Santa Margarita. Over' the years Joanna has gone and played internationally in Brazil, Hawaii, and Australia. She has been chosen to play for one of the most recognizable Club teams in California, OC Elite. This summer she will compete in Adidas showcase tournaments in Texas and two in Las Vegas. While also competing with her own local team in a tournament in Huntington Beach. Joanna has been the leader and face of the Lady Lancers for the past 3 years. She lead the team in scoring, assists and steals last two years. While being second in rebound- ing. She is hoping this year with a more solid team behind her that she will lead the Lady Lancers to its first CIF Championship. It is Joanna's dream to play College Basketball, and she is working towards that with her commitment to the game. By play- ing Club Ball she will be seen by more scouts and coaches. Joanna will be doing multiple fundraisers to help offset the costs of the traveling and playing with OC Elite. The Men's Soccer League is back. Competition starts July 8 and every Tuesday until Sep. 9. Applications are being accepted until July 5 and only up to 60 play- ers making four teams. It will be a I0 game season with two rounds of playoffs. The first game will start at 5 p.m. with the second at 7 p.m. The fee will be $70. You can sign up at City Hall or Pete's Caf6.
