27, 1946-May 2017 A Celebration of Life will be held at the Museum on July 2 FOR THE ISLANDER Cathy R0usso Sweeney was born in Los Angeles to Jeanne and Stan Rousso, on June 27, 1946. She and her brother Steve Rousso, and sister Robin Baranov, were the closest of sib- lings and friends throughout her life. Cathy went through school in Los Angeles, and in the San Fernando Valley, where she graduated from Birmingham High School and Valley College. After college, she pursued a career in ophthalmology-related endeavors, first as assistant in ophthalmology offices, and then in sales and highly successful sales management for fashion eyewear manufacturers. Cathy lived for a time with first husband Rick in other states, Cathy fell in love with Jack and they married in 1980. For close to 40 years Cathy moth- ered her cherished, blended fam- ily, including her children Ben Cohen and Erin Cohen Eubank, and stepchildren Julie Sweeney Bogart, Jim Sweeney, and Erin Sweeney Torr. In the process, Cathy created six additional Catalina lovers, including Jack. In her limited spare time, Cathy managed to hone her magnificent golf swing, and win multiple championships, includ- ing the Catalina Island Women's Club. After having won a pres- tigious invitational event at LA Country Club, Cathy fulfilled a longtime goal by qualifying for the USGA Senior Women's Championship. There, with Jack as her caddy, she competed suc- cessfully with the best senior women golfers in the nation. As much as she treasured her golfing life on the mainland, nothing, surpassed her love of being with her dear friends on the Avalon links. Her friend- returning to the San Fernando ships with virtually everyone in Valley in 1974. But all her life she knew that one day she would live on Catalina Island, her favor- ite place in the entire world. Her grandparents and Aunt Grayce Phillips bought the big white house on Beacon and Catalina in 1943, and it was there she was introduced to summer fun in Avalon. Cathy became a lover of the beach, and a devoted ocean swimmer, a source of fitness and peace of mind. Avalon were heartfelt and genu- ine. Cathy was all about inclu- sion, wanting the best for every- one she encountered and blessed with her ever present smile. Cathy is survived by Jack, her five children and stepchil- dren; her brother Steve, and sis- ter Robin; 13 grandchildren, and one great grandson; niece Dana Rousso, nephews Mike Baranov and Marc Baranov; her revered aunt and uncles, Trioa Robin, Herb Rousso and Lou and Karen Robin.
