Avalon Beautiful reinstates 'House of the Month' program
June 2014 House of the
Month
Avalon Beautiful is excited to
announce the return of the House
of the Month program. This pro-
gram was originally introduced
to the City of Avalon by Avalon
Beautiful in 1997 and followed
a tradition that Mr. EK. Wrigley
had of honoring the most beauti-
fully kept homes on Old Tremont
Street.
The House of the Month rec-
ognition highlights a home and
homeowner that has made a con-
certed effort to beautify their
street or neighborhood through
regular cleaning, maintenance and
upkeep, landscaping (especially
beautiful drought-resistant plant-
ing) and taking pride in their
home and community.
The June House of the Month
belongs to Carol and Bruce Fertig
at 329 Catalina Street. The Fertig
home was constructed in 1904 by
Bruce's great grandmother and
has remained in the family ever
since. There is a swing hanging
on the porch that pays homage to
Bruce's great grandmother, who
used to hang a swing to sleep in
the very same spot.
Over the years, the family has
kept the house intact, with the

same wooden walls, however each
,generation has done some work to
improve the house.
Mr. Fertig credits little touches
with making the house beautiful
including fresh paint, a colorful
and varied succulent garden and
a well swept porch and sidewalk.
Since the porch tends to be the
most used spot, he keeps paint on
hand to do touch-ups as neces-
sary. He sweeps regularly around
the property, although he does
admit he gets a great deal of help
