ASHAWAY LINE and TWINE MFG. CO. Ashaway, R. I, U.S.A. ESTABLISHED 1824 WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT? (Continued from Page 5, Colunm 2) Our mackerel experiences were more pleasant. This is a sport that is a spectacle as well as a corking lot of fun. One would scarcely believe what happens, but it is the gospel truth. When the waters of Catalina begin to warm 'up a bit late in March, the fisherman watch the sea gulls. They are the smartest things on wings, no mistake about that. Then, one morn- ing, everybody says "the gulls are working," and out we go in the good ship Leona. Here is what actually happens. The gulls distribute themselves around on =================================================================================================================================================== the surface of the ocean, one-here, one " i" there, and all over as far as the eyes [i Yore" tour of California Should Indude ii can reach. Fully as game as a big-mouth black bass of the same weight, so far as I can discover from actual experience. With the light tackle used they put up quite a stiff battle. If your boat should stop and you played each fish like you do bass, you'd get as much excitement out of it. But the trouble is, few fishermen can keep from catching as many as they can, with the result they are toss- ing out the line and pulling it in as fast as they can work the reel. While this is going on the sea around the boats is a sight. As far as your eyes can reach are millions of loose scales from the anchovies and sardines floating around. Immense schools of anchovies zigzagging here and there give a dark brown color to the surface of the water. Anchovies are wise in their genera- tion. Nature has taught them that this manner of swimming when at- tacked by their enemies affords them the best means of escape. Suddenly the activity stops, the wa- ter becomes quiet, your bites cease and the gulls are flying in a gigantic wave to another part of the ocean, perhaps three to five miles away. I was going to tell how a Catalina captain discovered the best way to catch tuna and swordfish by means of a kite, and also how barracuda and yellowtail are lured by means of a sled--but fishing stories are scarcely in my line, and I'll save them for another time.--The Cherry Circle.
