CAGE TWO THE CATALINA SUNSHINE PSYCHOLOGY ~Continued from Page 1, Col. 4) the blood circulation. What effect has nitrogen on the process of humml thinking? Carbon dioxide is said to "weaken the determination." It is the business of oxidation to polarize and balance the chemical ele- ments of the body so that the body may be controlled by thought and Mt;tivation. France is now sponsoring a nlove- ment to change the technique of singing on the theory that "It is stu- pid ~(, hold ,,ne's nlonth open St) lon~ and to make so much noise." a~ U N S H H*** E PGYCHOLOGY ]n reslgmSC to a question as to the o~rrcc! way to breathe, Dr. Walter R. Miles. formerly with the l)elmrtment of Psychology at Stanford University and now a member of the faculty ~f the Institute of Human Relations, Yale University, New Haven, said: "I supt, ose we wouht say it depends on lh,.. amonnt of excitement you are in- wardly entertaining ~r the quantity of physical work that you are (h)iuu. When demands are made on the in- dividual and the total volume of ven- ~ilati, ,n is increased, he quickh" chzmxes to that route of intake which ~ffcrs the least resistance, which of course is usually the mouth. Mouth breathing, however, as it carries the currents of air past the moistened membranes of tongue, lips, etc., dries out these and therefore causes a ~re:tter demand for liquid to replace the water that has been carried away. Nose breathing has the advantage t~n the (,'~anism that the r(mte of intake is a little longer and therefore the air iq T, VDI'|IIOIt arid lllafle nlore c,)Illf,),l!l- abh t,-~ the temlierature of the body :' ;, enters the tubes. Nose breath- ing probably promotes circularv changes and thus, as we say, helps to keep the head clear." SUNSHINE PSYCHOLOGY Human expression is ,~enerally made ill tWO :ll(welnents, nluseular exDan- si,m and muscular contraction.Mus- sciousness within thirty seconds," writes Dr. George W. Crile. "Con- sciousness, then, depends on oxidation Le., on energy transformation, just a~ engines and motors depend upon ox- idation for their energy-transforma- tion." SUNSHINE PSYCHOLOGY The n~rmal carburetor is built to operate at sea level with a mixture of 16 to 1, air and gasoline. At higher levels a device is placed on the car- buretor to remove moisture and cause a lower rate of gasoline to flow through the carburetor jets, thereby partially correcting the mixture. At sea level the motor takes in air at a pressure of 14.77. At 10,000 feet, the pressure is considerably lower. The two items that affect the operation t~i a carburetor are loss of compression and the mixture of gasoline becoming too rich. ----:o:-- CATALINA ISLAND SCHOOL FOR BOYS PARENTS' DAY (Continued from page 1, column 3) Trask jr.
