Monkee From page 1 grew frustrated with their lack of creative control over their music. In an attempt to reflect the enor- mous cultural changes that-were occurring in 1967, the group went psychedelic and starred in their own film, Head. It was the death knell of the group. But Dolenz had proven himself to be not only a superb singer but also a versatile comedian and actor. During the ensuing years af- ter The Monkees' initial success, Dolenz embarked on a solo career and often re-united in concert with fellow Monkees Peter Tork and Davy Jones. Indeed, Monkees hits and even the television series have endured the test of time, and the group con- tinues to be recognized as one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. But the Monkees have yet to be elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; an almost unimagi- nable oversight, and an area of ne- glect made all the more poignant after the recent death of Davy Jones. Kid Ventures From page 1 The non-profit will take over the preschool's operation on July 1. Marshall siid it would save the city about $130,000 a year, or roughly the same amount of the city's cur- rent subsidy. There are seven members of the volunteer board, including Marshall. They will be introduced at the beginning of the June 5 Avalon City Council meeting. In the meantime, the city and the board are working out the last minute details of how much the city will remain involved with the preschool. The city will also make a loan to the non-profit for initial operat- ing costs and allow the preschool to continue using the city's pre- school facility at no charge for a period of time. The board will be responsible for doing fundraising through grants, special events and other tactics. The preschool is licensed for 28 full-time students. Marshall said there are 27 children enrolled, however, many of them are not full-time, which keeps the revenue less than the expenses. "Some are part time, whether half day or just a few hours," Marshall said. "We have delayed a lot of new enrollment until we can get a full compliment of staff. We will be actively soliciting in July for new students and hopefully we will get more full-time "ones or some who are half day in the morning and others half day in the afternoon." "So many of our children come from Spanish speaking families and by attending Catalina Kids Ventures it gives them a boost up for mainstreaming into school later on," she said. "We also do potty training and train them for appropriate behavior...no fighting, no biting and how to share." Parents who cannot afford to pay for their children's preschool may qualify for substantial assis- tance through government agen- cies such as the Children's Home Society. Micky and The Monkees received the blues when it returned. Micky will lend tremendous insight into exactly how American musicians were influenced by British bands like Peter and Gordon, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Spencer Davis Group. This is a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity to not only see but interact with such a large group of personalities that made rock history." The Catalina Island Museum Presents The British Invasion Rocks America will take place on Saturday, June 30 at 4:00 p.m. in the theater of the Avalon Casino. Immediately following the sym- posium at 6:30 p.m., symposium participants will be available for a signing in the museum's Harbor Room. Admission is free to the public The opening reception for the exhibition Gimme Some Lovin': The Spencer Davis Group will take place at 6 p.m in the museum.
