Capsule, Page 4 Compton youth visit Catalina The Compton to Catalina program recently brought some youths from the hard-edged main- land city to the Island. The pro- gram exposes young people from Compton to the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. Its philosophy is that the vast majority of such kids never get on the water. Many may go their entire lives without direct- ly experiencing the Picific Ocean, even though they live within five or 10 miles of it. The Greater Union Baptist Church recruits people to partici- pate in the program. The Center for Environment, Commerce and Energy makes arrangements for the tours and facilitates educa- tional experiences for the stu- dents. Each is a daylong affair that includes transportation to Long Beach, where the tours originate. Participants have escorts at all times and activities on the Island are arranged to maximize the en- vironmental experience. The program uses Catalina Ex- press for transportation. The Compton youths are ex- posed to numerous activities avail- able on the Island, including: The Eco Tour Zip Line, hiking, biking, camping, swimming, snOrkel- ing, diving, sightseeing, dining, shopping or relaxing, to name a few. Theirmain activities include a submersible ride to view ocean vegetation and fish species and a tour of the electric power plant. !
