One of the star patterns that was especially noticenble was Lun the Liun, high in tbe south as soun as it g~ ~ To the Egyptians 4000 years ago, Leo served a practical p~ to ev~ryune who lived along the Nile. When Leo was in conjunction with the sun, it was the "Thne. of the Lions," when the sun shone raore directly on Egypt, heating the air and baking the ground, compelling the lions that lived in the neighhoring hills to seek the Joe Machado Field will host this year's Rugby Festival. Event set to include weddingof elementary school sweethearts FOR THE ISLANDER The 25th annual Catalina Island Rugby Festival will be held Saturday, May 5, at Joe Machado Field. The festival is an all-day mas- ters 40 and over "Old Boys" rugby event Starting at approximately 8 a.m. This is a 12-team event where all teams are guaranteed third place. This is meant to be a social occasion, Some of the highlights include Noland and Veronica Day being married next to the field at theend oftbe days matches. Veronica had a train of rugby jerseys to walk on. Noland and Veronica were a couple in the third-and fourth-grade and reunit- ed.after 40 years. ~The evertt:~will also include ed in the past. This year the vent will feature the Tight Five Rugby Old Boys from Washington, D.C. Also check out the Ancient Aztecs from San Diego. Each year they do a tour shirt. At noonish a match will be played for Rnggers 55 and over. There will be food and drink provided at the Plaza next to the field plus a excellent array of Festival merchandise available for sale. The festival was started by Joe Hendrix and has become a fun- draiser for the Cancer Support Community of Redondo Beach and for youth rugby. The 25-year-old Catalina Island Rugby Festival was initially played at Avalon High School, but in time the festival has relo- cated to the Joe Machado Sports Complex- After Hendrix was diagnosed with cancer he started the fundraising aspect of the fes- tival. Cancer Support was instru- mental in Hendrix's battle with refreshing waters of Egypt's lifeblood for relief. The Egyptians even had a reason for why it became so hot dining that time of the year. The sun combined its powers with Leo's brightest star, Regulus, and the other prominent luminaries of the king of the beasts to produce the summer heat that drove the lions crazy with thirst. At the time of the ~on of the Great Pyramid, 2560 BC, the sun actually occulted Regulus on July 12 (Gregorian Calendar) so that the fion was in close Woximity to the sun from mid- June th-ough mid-August. Today, the sun passes below Regulus, but it is Close to Len's alpha star fro~lato July tt,aough late September. Why the change? Our calendric system is based upon.the tropical year which res.ults fztun the ~ interval between two successive crossings of the yea'hal equinox (first moment of spring) by the sun and not a full revolunun of Earth aroond Sol which ts about 20 mmutos longer. The westward motion of the vea~al equinox mmspires because the Earth's axis wobbles in a neoxly 26,000-year cyclecalled the precession of theequinoxes.
