The local group of 31 civillian volunteers, who are part of the local CERT team, Disaster Communi- cations (DCS) Administration-support and Search and Rescue teams, contributed over 1200 hours of volunteer time in 2011 alone. Tbemajority of these volunteers belong to the local CERT. The Com- munity Emergency Response Team Program is a nationwide program designed to educate and train people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medi- cal operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an • event when professional responders are not imme- diately available to help 6r when their resources have been depleted. Avalon's CERT team is also trained to assist our local emergency responders and the hospital during any emergency situation. Locally, the Avalon CERT team, which was formed in 200t is comprised of approximately 30 community volunteers that have been trained in these topics and more. The majority of the group has traveled to Fort McClellan in Anniston, Ala., for further training through the Department of Homeland Security in regards to terrorism aware- ness and response, including hands o n training in weapons of mass destruction. The team is all volunteer with members receiv- ing no compensation for their time and efforts. The CERT team most often is utilized to assist with traffic control during marathons and other large events on the Island, but is also used during major emergency events such a the fire in May of 2007. On Monday, April 16, the group of Avalon Sta- tion volunteers was honored at the Lobster Trap.
