Tables for Ladies RESCENT AVENUE IS OPPOSITE OUR PLACE STUDYING ELECTRONS, DISCOVER RADIO SET By Science Service Philadelphia, April 2.--Twoseientists here just couhl not help making a radio set. They were hard at work studying the excitation of light from nitrogen molecules by electron bom- bardment when they discovered that they had unwittingly constructed an apparatus that was capable of receiv- ing broadcasts. Dr. C. B. Bazzoni, director of re- search, Morgan Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania, and Dr. E. E. Wit- mer, a research fellow, explained in a statement to Science Service the inter- esting example of radio reception thru apparatus designed for an entirely dif- ferent purpose. "The outfit was equivalent to a two electrode gas-filled tube, directly cou- pled to a Ioop antenna by a high resis- tance," Dr. Bazzoni explained. "Recti- fication, by the gas arc in the tube, of impulses picked up by ordinary ceiling wires in conduits explains the recep- tion. The storage battery connections acted as a loop having very wide re- sonance range. Therefore no tuning was required. The apparatus was not selective, however. The whole phenonl- enon is explainable without introduc- ing any new radio theory." (A Science Service Feature) TEST YOURSELF FOR LOGICAL THOUGHT Are you a logical thinker? Try this test and see if you can make the correct selection of words. You have three minutes in which to work. Directions--Below are words in big letters.
