This was the first description I was given by an instructor 30 years ago, as the giant black seabass, visited her up north in one of the chan- nel islands. I must admit, I didn't fully believe her, but her descriptions were quite vivid. Ten more years go by, and finally in stealth action, I was able to dive with the giant black seabass right here on Santa Catalina Island. I was so elated! I could not believe the size of the big guy. Every year, the giant black sea- bass reappear inthe spring time. They are here "at the world famous Casino dive park!!! Originally the GBS was known as the Pacific jew- fish. They can weigh up to 562 pounds, and back in 1910, it was reported that someone caught one that weighed 800 pounds out in the Gulf of California. GBS have been known to live for 75 years. Giant black seabass feed on crustacean, and lots of fish such as mackeral, sheephead, sand bass, and crab. Real threat faced Southern California waters by the fish- ery. The GBS is now protected. Since 2004, it is suggested that the population size of GBS may be increasing!!!! Water temp 61 degrees," Visibility 30-40 feet.
