PAGE NINE D.A.R. DEMANDS PROPER DIS- PLAY OF AMERICAN FLAG As an antidote to pacifist propaKan- da, the Daughters of the American Revolution recently denlanded closer observance of tke rules for proper dis- play of the American flag. Takim, the warning of the department of justice against desecration of the flag as a guide, the Americanization committee of the D. A. R. called on the An~eri- can people to memorize the rules for displaying the flag and to see that they are observed. Following is the com- mittee's statement : "The department of justice has is- sued a warning against desecration of the United States flag. The flag must not be used in connection with adver- tising matter of any kind. The flag must not b,e used on tile face of en- velopes. It should not appear on towels, handkerchiefs, aprons, or on utilitarian clothes of any kind. The flag shouhl not be used as a table cover. It should not be used beneath any place where p,eople sit or stand. It shouhl not be allowed to trail on the ground. Its place is aloft, to wave over its people. "The flag should not be pernfitted lo fly on civilian property before sun- rise or after suns.el. It is properly flying over civilian property on na- tional or state holidays and on historic and special occasions. "The flag should not be draped. \Vhen the flag is displayed horizontal- ly or vertically against a wall it should be displayed flat with the union at the t,bserver's left. When the flag is dis- WHY DO THEY DO IT? Last year over three hundred million dollars were spent for advertising, ac- cording to figures of the advertising agencies, and the greater part of this vast sum was expended by the kcenest business men of the Ulfited States. If "advertising doesn't pay," as some business men still contend, it is time wide-awake business men who do ad- vertise were finding it out and pocket- ing the money that goes for publicity, for certainly they advertise for no other purpose than to expand business. The truth of the matter is that we are now in the world's greatest ad- vertising age--where publicity is es- sential to every avenue of business-- and the merchant who can't see it and feel it is but blocking his own path- way to progress, says the Wihnington Journal. This does not mean that ohl people live on the average to be eighteen years ohter than they did. It means that more people live to be old. And in a large measure it means that more babies grow up. It is on infant mortality that the most telling work has been done. On the other hand, physicians note an increase, in what are called the de- generative diseases. It apllears that many congenitally weak are kept alive to maturity, only to die of heart disease, kidney trouble and the like in the forties and early fifties.
