50 YEARS AGO MARCH 1961 Researched by Chuck Liddell // Compiled by Charles M. Kelly The following information was culled from Catalina Islander archives in the Catalina Island Museum: News The Avalon City Council passed Resolution #1121, "Implor- ing All Patriotic Americans to Awaken And Fight All Com- munistic Activities." The council planned to pass an ordinance that every business in Avalon must have their em- ployees fingerprinted and ap- proved by the FBI and state government before they can be employed. They would then have to carry a perma- nent card. Sixteen new birds were added to Bird Park. Mike Bowne resigned as Avalon Fire Department chief and was replaced by John Hax. Avalon Air Transport took Cata- lina Channel Airlines to court for unfair competition. General Mrs. Malcolm Renton was presi- dent of the PTA. James O. Taylor was the new pres- ident of the "Shrine Club." Margaret Upton was a worthy ma- tron of the "Eastern Star." Mrs. Robert Ellis was the new president of the "Women's Club." Miss Mabel Fennie was the Amer- ican Cancer Society's residen- tial chairman. Ronald Irvine was director of the city of Avalon's Utility De- partment. Jim Laurin was "Sugarloaf' edi- tor-in-chief. John Mock was a worthy patron of the "Eastern Star." "Eastern Star." "El Encanto Community Center," Surf Room, Crescent and Marilla. "Mariner's Girl Scout Troop 319 (M. S. S. Ning Po). Joyce Lorentzen was president. A1 Beron was chief of police. Approximately 10,000 tons of freight was carried by barge in 1960. Lee Lavender moved to Rolling Hills after living on Catalina for 56 years. No cars were permitted on Cres- cent, between Metropole and Sumner. "This Is Your Life, Virginia Rent- on.~' Twenty-one new electrical trans- formers were installed. Fountain at Crescent and Sumner resurrected. Rainfall that year to date: 2.49 inches.
