In 1942, the men, regarded as the
fathers of open circuit scuba, French
naval officer Jacques Cousteau
and his engineering partner Emile
Gagnan altered history when they
created the first compact and reliable
ambient pressure underwater breath-
ing device which they coined their
“Aqualung!”
During that time, most of the
world was caught up in political-
military conflict, and the Aqualung
systems were largely used in experi—
mental Naval exploits by France,
Britain and the United States.
Shortly after WWII, on March
10, 1947, Cousteauapplied for US.
patents for the Aqualung systems
and the application was granted on
Oct. 18, 1949. Within days, 11
Aqualung units were shipped to
New York From France. Cousteau’s
brother-in—law Rene Bussoz and his
friend and colleague Arnie Post took
receivership of the Aqualung units
and Arnie, under Bussoz’ guidance,
conducted a test dive in a NY. swim—
ming pool and is credited with con-
ducting the first official Aqualung
