I :,n . , t t'~" t ' , ' Friday, February 14, 2003 Scott Schmeckpeper I would like to nominate Scott Schmeckpeper as Person of the Year for his commitment to family and this community. Most may know him as the "Big Kahuna" of the Cornerstone Teen Center. Everyday he helps teens with schoolwork, takes them on fun mission trips or i's there to be an understanding person to talk to. He learned, through trial and error, what motivates teenagers and how they think by helping his wife, Darlene, raise her two children and one of his own, as well as a foster child he and Darlene care for. Now, with his middle child, Jenny, off to fight for our country, not only is he running the Teen Center and taking care of a foster child, but he is also taking care of Jenny's 3-year-old son. I nominate Scott for Person of the Year because he has given so much of his time and energy to the well-being of family, his own and ours. Dawn Shawhan Avalon, CA Kay Spurgeon The vibrant colors of her patchwork jacket match the enthusiasm with which Kay embraces life. Kay has been an Island regular since she was a teenager. It was in Avalon that she met the love of her life and it is no wonder she has chosen to make Avalon her permanent home. I have had countless visitors tell me that Kay is one of the highlights of their vacation in Avalon. Her smile and stories brighten any room she walks into.
