Lancers
Latest game should
earn team spot in
basketball playoffs
BY STEVE HALL
The Avalon Boys Varsity
Basketball team had the experi-
ence of a lifetime on Wednesday,
Feb. 3 when they traveled to
Los Angeles, to play their new
rival Vaughn High School at the
worldfamous Staples Center.
The Lancers got to lace up
their shoes and run their flex
offense on a professional basket-
ball court.
Avalon had the support of
about 100 Islanders who accom-
panied the team on the trip and
purchased a ticket to see the JV
team play at noon, the Varsity
team play at 1:30 and the Clippers

boys varsity plays at the
play at 7:30.
Thanks to all those who con-
tributed their money and time to
the event.
It was a wonderful experi-
ence, one we will never forget.
Unfortunately, the Lancers were
not able to hold onto the lead they
had established at the beginning
and lost in the end by a score of
57 to 47.
The Lancers were led by
Junior Emmanuel Amezcua with
13 points and Senior Forward
Ernesto Gomez, with 12 points
and 6 rebounds. Avalon came out
on fire but were not able to sus-
tain their quality play throughout
the game. Despite the loss it was
still a great experience.
Monday's game determines
playoff fate
On Monday, Feb. 12 the
Lancers faced the TVT Lions in a
very important league game thai
would decide their playoff fate.
Avalon has not had many home
games this year so it was nice to
have the home crowd support.
The Lancers and Lions played
competitive basketball through-
out the contest and Hickey Rohlik
Fieldhouse was in an uproar dur-
Staples Center
ing the entire game.
The Lancers built a 6 point
lead going into the final minute
of the game and luckily held on
to a 51-48 victory.
This time the Lancers were led
by Senior Captain Jose Carmen
Silva, returning from a broken
jaw and again Emme Amezcua.
Amezcua had 16 points and 6
rebounds while Silva contributed
14 points to the cause.
This is a win that guaran-
tees a second place finish for
the Lancers in the San Joaquin
League and should earn them a
spot in the 2016 CIF. Playoffs.
Congratulations to the Lancer
Hoopsters, especially our senior
players who will be honored this
Friday evening, Feb. 12 in a pre-
game ceremony before our game
with longtime rival Holy Martyrs
at 7 p.m. Please come on up and
support your local student/ath-
letes as they play in their last
regular season home game.
Steve Hall is the coach for
the Avalon Lancers boys varsity
basketball team.
