Try heading out for the week- end with your sweetheart on April 21 to Catalina Island. There will be no better chance this year lot such a perfect hand-holding and star- gazing opportunity. The LyridS Meteor Shower will be visible across the lower 48 states on that Saturday night. While there are five more meteor showers expected this year, April 21 will be the warmest time of the year with the best visibility. With a new moon in the sky, the heavenly starscape will be unencumbered by moonlight. Catalina's convenient location "26 miles" from the Cali- fornia coast will also be far from the lights of the big city. If you plan to go, book ahead just to be safe. The Seaport Village offers excellent rates and is about a 2-minute walk up from Step Beach and the center of town. Located atop a hill. Seaport Village is also above any lights from weekend nightlife. The sun will be setting at 6:43 p.m. this evening. Enjoy the lawn and pull out some chairs on this smoke-free property where you can bring a dinner picnic. .April is still considered "the slow season" on Catalina so expect the island and its beautiful beaches to be almost empty: perfect for ro- -_ .' - "ii.IR" -. IT UP ISLAND'S mantic strolls together. The quaint size of Catalina's main city of Ava- lon means safe nights and a 10: minute walk from any hotel to the beache.s i n town. Take a blanket with you to Des- canso Beach as the view of the wa- ter and the cities across the sea is superb. For dinner picnics I recom- mend picking up an order (or two) of Volcano Sushi from C. C. Gal- laghers paired with one of their ex- cellent selections of saki. A bottle of wine or one Of their delectable desserts is an after dinner option. The most romantic dining options in Avalon are found at Steve's Steak House or the Villa Portofino restaurant.
